Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) is a postgraduate
vocational training program for medical graduates who wish
to qualify as general practioners. The training involves
a three year full-time (or part-time equivalent) commitment.
AGPT delivery is managed by General Practice Education
and Training Ltd (GPET), an independent company set up by
the Commonwealth Government in March 2001 to manage a regionalised
training network.
Training is delivered by 21 Regional Training Providers
(RTPs) across Australia. GP Synergy delivers Australian
General Practice Training in the Sydney metropolitan area
and the New England and North West regions of NSW.
During training, Registrars gain practical experience in
teaching hospitals, in rural and urban practices and in
specialised medical centres which provide health care for
Aborigines and people from socially disadvantaged groups.
Training is also available in Rural and Remote medicine.
The training is conducted within accredited medical practices
and is supervised and assessed by experienced medical educators.
It includes a mentoring element and self-directed learning
as well as face-to-face tuition.
Towards the end of training, participants become eligible
to sit the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
(RACGP) examination. To become a Fellow of the College (FRACGP),
the goal of training, a participant must pass the exam and
fulfil all other AGPT and RACGP training requirements.
